BATTLE HONOURS AWARDED TO THE DEVONSHIRE REGIMENT AFTER THE GREAT WAR

 

The Consecration and Presentation of Colours to the Devonshire Regiment at Exeter on 28 July 1920 by

General Sir George M. Bullock K.C.B

This announcement was published in 1925 by the Devonshire Association:

"The following battle honours have been awarded for the Great War to the Devonshire Regiment which comprised 25 battalions. The honours marked with an asterisk are those which have been selected to be borne on Colours or Appointments:

THE DEVONSHIRE REGIMENT

*La Bassée 1914 Neuve Chapelle, Hill 60, *Ypres 1915, Ypres 1917, Gravenstafel, St. Julien, Aubers, *Loos, *Somme 1916 and 1918, Vimy 1917, Bullecourt, Pilckem, Broodseinde, Passchendaele, Rosières, Villers Bretonneux, Lys, Hazebrouck *Bois des Buttes, Marne 1918, Tardenois, Bapaume 1918, Drocourt Quiant, *Hindenburg Line, Canal du Nord, Beaurevoir, Cambrai, 1918, Selle, Sambre, France and Flanders 1914 - 1918, Piave, *Vittorio Veneto, Italy 1917 - 1918, *Doiran 1917- 1918, Macedonia 1915 - 1918, Egypt 1916 - 1917, Gaza, Nebi Samwil, Jerusalem, *Palestine 1917-1918,Tigris 1916, Kut al Amara 1917, *Mesopotamia 1916 - 1918.

A further list of battle honours awarded for the Great War includes the following Yeomanry Regiments, the honours selected to be borne on Colours being marked with an asterisk:

ROYAL 1st DEVON YEOMANRY (HUSSARS)

*Somme 1918, *Bapaume 1918, *Hindenburg Line, *Epehy, *France and Flanders 1918, *Gallipoli 1915, *Egypt 1916 - 1917,  Gaza, *Jerusalem,  Tell Asur, *Palestine 1918 - 1918

ROYAL NORTH DEVON YEOMANRY (HUSSARS)

*Somme 1918, *Bapaume 1918, *Hindenburg Line, *Epehy, *France and Flanders 1918,*Gallipoli 1915,  *Egypt 1916 - 1917, Gaza,  *Jerusalem,  Tell Asur ,*Palestine 1917 - 1918.

The 5th Devons (The Prince of Wales' Battalion)  was raised in Millbay and the majority of the men were from Plymouth or Cornwall. This photo shows them leaving for India  at Friary Station, Plymouth. From here they went to Southampton, embarking on  9 October 1914. They arrived in Karachi on 11 November that year and remained in India until the Spring of 1917 when they moved on to Egypt.

Note that some of the troops are still wearing their own caps.
