1st EXETER & SOUTH DEVON VOLUNTEER RIFLE CORPS INITIAL MEMBERSHIP LIST COMPILED BY ARTHUR RODWAY |
In an era in which there were few opportunities for people to cross the great social divides of rank and status, Volunteer Regiments offered a fairly unique opportunity for men from aristocratic families, professionals and those engaged in trade to mingle on the Parade Ground and at the regular camps.
Arthur Rodway's list below reveals men from Devon's "first" families such as James Buller and William Chichester, professional men such as John Bucknill and Henry Rodway and tradesmen such as George Wippell, Exeter's leading ironmonger and William Beasley, the Torquay wine merchant - men representing a good cross-section of Devon's social classes and united by a common cause - to make this new venture a success. |

July 1876 - he became Mayor of Totnes and attended, with his wife, a luncheon given by the officers of the 4th Administrative Battalion of the Devon Rifle Volunteers. |
