THE CYCLIST BATTALIONS OF THE DEVONSHIRE REGIMENT - 3. CASUALTIES

Some men listed as having died in the UK would have died in military hospitals and been buried in cemeteries near by. Others may not have died from battle wounds but from normal medical causes. Some of the casualties were very young - note especially Fred Bell and Harry Chown who were just 16.

MEMBERS OF THE 1/7th CYCLIST BATTALION WHO LOST THEIR LIVES 1914 - 1919

ARTHUR PERCIVAL BAGSHAW	Private ("Percy") Arthur Percival Bagshaw. Son of George and Selina Bagshaw. Born in Plymouth in 1895. Enlisted at Plymouth. Service No. 848. Killed in action in France and Flanders 9 August 1916 aged 21.
FRED BELL	Private Fred Bell.. Son of Mrs. King (formerly Bell) of Plymouth. Born in Dartmouth in 1899. Enlisted at Dartmouth. Service No. 1171. Died in the UK 5 April 1915 aged 16. Buried in the cemetery at Branscombe.
CHARLES BURNARD	Private Charles Burnard. Son of Mrs. Eliza Ching of Delabole, Cornwall. Born in St. Teath, Cornwall in 1898 . Enlisted at Bodmin. Service No. 2321. Died in the UK 9 August 1916 aged 18.
ARTHUR CANDY	Private Arthur Candy. Place of birth not known. Enlisted at Exeter. Service No. 1716. Died in the UK 18 June 1915.
EDWIN GEORGE CHENNEOUR	Private Edwin George Chenneour. Born in Sidmouth in 1895. Enlisted at Exeter. Service No. 908. Killed in action in France and Flanders 11 July 1915 aged 20. Buried in the Higher Cemetery, Exeter.
HARRY CHOWN	Private Harry P. Chown. Born in Exeter in 1899. Enlisted at Exeter. Service No. 1018. Attached to the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment and killed in action in France and Flanders 21 August 1916 aged 16.
STANLEY EDWARD DAVIES	Private Stanley Edward Davies. Son of George and Amelia Davies of Abergavenny. Born in Liverpool in 1896. Enlisted at Abergavenny, Wales. Service No.3719. Died in the UK 27 February 1917 aged 21. Buried in the Ipswich Cemetery.
WILLIAM NOEL EDWARDS	Private William Noel Edwards. Born in Fulham, Middlesex in 1894. Enlisted at London. Service No. 291784. Died in the UK 11 March 1917 aged 21. Buried in Wandsworth (Streatham) Cemetery.
GEORGE JAMES FORD	Private George James Ford. Son of John George and Mary Ann Ford of Exeter. Born in Exeter in 1884. Enlisted at Exeter. Service No. 1036. Died in the UK 19 February 1915 aged 31. Buried in the Higher Cemetery, Exeter.
ALFRED HUDSON	Sergeant Alfred Christopher Hudson. Son of T.J and Henrietta Hudson of Fowey. Born in Fowey, Cornwall in 1892. Enlisted at Plymouth. Service No.830. Killed in action in France and Flanders while attached to 2/7th Battalion on 21 August 1916 aged 24.
EDWIN CHARLES LANE	Private Edwin Charles Lane. Brother of Mrs. C. M. Sergeant of Paignton. Born in Plymouth in 1885. Enlisted at Plymouth. Service No. 2651. Died in the UK 27 September 1916. aged 31. Buried in Ford Park Cemetery, Plymouth.
CHARLES EDMUND MARTIN	Private Charles Edmund Martin. Born in Brighton in 1897. Enlisted at Guildford, Surrey. Service No. 292045. Died in the UK 17 April 1917 aged 20. Buried in Ipswich Cemetery.
ARTHUR PARSONS	Private Arthur Henry Parsons. Son of William and the late Mrs. Parsons. Born in Cullompton in 1896. Enlisted at Exeter. Service No. 930. Died in France and Flanders 21 August 1916 aged 20.
FRANCIS H. RIDGWAY	Private Francis Henry Ridgway. Son of Edward and Alice Ridgway of Exeter. Born in Cardiff in 1892. Enlisted at Exeter. Service No. 1033. Died in the UK 11 October 1914 aged 22. Buried in Exwick Cemetery, Exeter.
STANLEY SEYMOUR SOUTHWOOD	Private Stanley Seymour Southwood. Son of Samuel and Annie Southwood of Hele, Bradninch. Born in Tiverton in 1898. Enlisted at Cullompton. Service No. 797. Died in the UK 14 August 1915 aged 17. Buried in St. Lawrence Churchyard, Bigbury.
PERCY REGINALD SPRAGUE	Private Percy Reginald Sprague. Son of Frederick and Hannah Sprague of Exeter. Born in Exeter in 1896. Enlisted at Exeter. Service No.978. Died in the UK 13 August 1915 aged 19.
STUART WEBBER	Private Stuart C. Webber. Son of John and Emma Webber of Timberscombe. Born in Somerset in 1898. Enlisted at Exeter. Service No. 2027. Died in the UK 4 September 1916 aged 20. Buried in the churchyard of St. Mary, Bawdsey.
ERNEST JAMES WHATLEY	Private Ernest James Victor Whatley. Son of George Whatley of Bath. Born in Bath in 1899. Enlisted at Bath. Service No. 292019. Died in the UK 9 March 1917 aged 18. Buried in the cemetery of St. James's, Bath.

ERNEST DUDNEY	Private Ernest S. Dudney Born in Exmouth in 1884. Enlisted at Exeter. Service No. 1833. Died in the UK 17 December 1915 aged 21.
WILLIAM HACKER	Corporal William Hacker. Son of W. Hacker of Summercourt, Cornwall. Born in Plymouth in 1884. Enlisted at Plymouth. Service No.1499. Served in the 1/7th Battalion also. Died in the UK 21 May 1915 aged 31. Buried in the churchyard of St. Mary at Tamerton Foliott.
ERNEST WILLIAM SAVAGE	Private Ernest William Savage. Son of William and Emily Savage of Romsey, Hants. Born in 1899. Enlisted at Southampton. Service No. 3174. Died in the UK 1 February 1917 aged 18. Buried in Margate Cemetery, Kent.
ALBERT EDWARD WHITE	Private Albert Edward White. Son of Frederick and Sarah White of Frome and husband of Winifred White of Luton, Beds. Born in Frome in 1884. Enlisted at Dorchester (Portland). Service No. 291636. Died in the UK 23 September 1917 aged 33. Buried in Margate Cemetery, Kent.
ARTHUR WHITTON	Private Arthur Whitton. Son of Nathaniel G. Whitton of Denham Road, Exeter. Born in Exeter in 1886. Enlisted at Exeter. Service No. 1673. Died in the UK 16 February 1915 aged 29. Buried in the Higher Cemetery, Exeter.
