BICKLEIGH RESIDENTS IN THE TIVERTON DIRECTORY OF 1894/5

 

This is an unusual Directory entry in that it names those inhabitants who live in rented accommodation and who are normally omitted. Those who own their own property are listed separately under the PRIVATE description -  the other people who live in the village are described as COTTAGERS and in many instances, their trade is also shown.

 

 

BICKLEIGH

Parish and village, 4 miles from Tiverton and 10 from Exeter on the Exe Valley (South) Railway, Cadeleigh-Bickleigh Station. In Tiverton Division of Devonshire, Tiverton Union and County Court District. Church dedicated to St. Mary, restored in 1848. Rectory, yearly value £267 with residence and glebe in the gift of the Misses Carew and held since 1849 by the Rev. R. B. Carew, MA. Acreage = 1,835. Rateable value £2,492. Population 259. Letters through Tiverton.

Churchwardens: Messrs Samuel Tozer and Humphrey Chattey.

Poor-Law Guardian: Mr. William Elston.

Chedderleigh: A hamlet with farm-house and a few cottages.
