The War Memorial in the churchyard at Nymet Tracey
©Richard J. Brine |
Bow is a village in two parts. Nymet Tracey, the original central area, grew up around the church of St. Bartholomew. In the Middle ages, another settlement of houses developed on what was to become the turnpike road from Crediton to Okehampton and this settlement, under the name of Bow, eventually became the more important part of the village, brought to life by the coaching trade and an annual fair, which was still in existence in 1900. When the railway finally came to the village, the line was laid in the vicinity of Nymet Tracey with the station being known as Bow. |
