Harriet Barton was the wife of Maurice Charles Barton, a retired Colonel, formerly in the Royal Engineers. Their home was at Serai at West Hill, Budleigh Salterton. At the outbreak of war in 1914, Mrs. Barton set up a 20-bed VAD Hospital at Budleigh Salterton and actively participated in the running of the hospital until January 1919. She died in Budleigh Salterton 6 March 1919 aged 56. Harriet Barton was awarded the MBE for her services to the hospital. |
