When the 1891 Census was taken, John Walling Brooks, the proprietor of Wallingbrook School was 52 years old. At that time, his school was still established in the Square at Chulmleigh, trading, according to the Census, as Rock Hill Academy. He and his wife Amelia lived on the premises with their daughter Sarah who was described as the Pianoforte Tutor. Also living on the premises were James A Proctor (47) and John Powlesland (21) both Assistant Schoolmasters.
