These names were collected by Tom Walters Venn.  He believed that these men were eligible for inclusion on the Crediton War Memorial  because of associations they had with that place and the surrounding area. This was true for many of these men who were born in places such as Colebrook, Copplestone, Shobrooke, Poughill and Sandford etc. but others were  born quite a distance from Crediton and their link may be more tenuous which, perhaps, is why they were originally omitted.

Private George Acres of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Sarah Acres of Sandford. Born in Sandford in the September Quarter of 1892. Died 25 February 1915 aged 22.

Private Walter George Alsop of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Harriett Alsop, of Poughill, Crediton. Born in Poughill in the June Quarter of 1892.  Died 5 February 1915 aged 22.

Private William Thomas Baker of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Caroline Baker and husband of Maude L. Baker, of Midlands, Mary Tavy, Tavistock. Born in Broadclyst in the June Quarter of 1888. Died 14 Jan 1915 aged 26.

Private George Ball of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of  William and Ellen Ball.  Born in Drewsteignton in 1880. Died 22 Feb 1915 aged 35.

Acting Corporal Robert Ball of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Lucy Ball. Born in Sandford in 1887. Died 4 September 1916 aged 29. 

Private Alfred Beer of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment.  Believed to be the son of the late Elias and Emma Beer. Born in Crediton in 1885. Died 23 October 1914 aged 29. 

Private Frederick Brealey of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Ellen Brealey. Born in Clannaborough in the December Quarter of  1884. Died 23 August 1918 aged 39.

Private Albert Cann of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Ellen Drew, of Collis Park, Morchard Bishop, Crediton. Born in Morchard Bishop in  the June Quarter of 1896. Died 2 May 1917 aged 21.

Sergeant Sydney Richard Cobley of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Sarah Cobley and husband of Patience. Born  in 1872. Died 6 November 1914 aged 42. 

Lance Corporal Dennis William  Fred Crispin of 1/6 Territorial Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Annie Elizabeth Crispin, of Sheets, Sandford, Crediton. Born in Sandford in the June Quarter of 1896. Died 8 March 1916 aged 19.

Private Frederick George Crook of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Robert and Ann Crook, of Shobrooke Village, Crediton. Born in Shobrooke in  the March Quarter of 1894. Died 9 May 1917 aged 23.

Private Fred Drew of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Born in Crediton in the September Quarter of 1889. Died 10 March 1915 aged 25. Believed to have been brought up in  Lapford.

Private Frederick Drew of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Isabella Drew.  Born in Upton Hellions  in the June Quarter of 1891. Died 1 July 1918 aged 28.

Private William Percy Drew of 1/6 Territorial Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Born in Sandford in  the June Quarter of 1895.  Died 8 March 1916 aged 22.

Private Ernest John Easterbrook of the 10th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Easterbrook, of Coleford, Copplestone. Born in Crediton in 1895. Died 9 October 1917 aged 22.

Private John Evans of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Mary Ann Evans. Born in Sandford in the December Quarter of 1891. Died 1 July 1916 aged 25.

Private George C. Ford of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Samuel and Emma Ford. (See below) Born in Crediton in 1883. Died 25 April 1915 aged 32. 

Acting Corporal Wallace Samuel Ford of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of the late Samuel and Emma Ford, of Crediton (see above). Born in Crediton in 1895.  Died 16 May 1917 aged 20. 

Private George Gallin of the 16th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Rebecca Galling, of Rattle St., Lapford. Born in Crediton in the September Quarter of 1886.  Died 3 December 1917 aged 31.

Private Arthur Gillard of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Samuel and Ann Gillard, of 5, West St., Bampton. Born in 1894. Died 17 December 1914 aged 25. 

Private John Gillard of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Samuel Gillard, of Shute, Kilmington and the late Fanny Gillard (see below). Born in 1880.  Died 17 October 1917 aged 37.

Private Sydney Gillard of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Samuel and Fanny Gillard (see above). Born in Cheriton Fitzpaine in the March Quarter of 1887.  Died 11 December 1915 aged 28.

Lance Corporal Arthur James Grant of the 16th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Frank Grant, of Escot Lodge, Ottery St. Mary and the late Jane Grant. Born in Crediton in the June Quarter of 1894.  Died 2 September 1918 aged 24. Also served in Egypt and Palestine.

Corporal  John Adams Grant of 1/5 Territorial Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and Mary Jane Grant, of 62, Old Exeter St., Chudleigh. Born in Crediton in the March Quarter of 1890. Died 15 February 1916  aged 26.

Sergeant John Henry Harris of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment.  Son of John and Lucy Harris. Born in Colebrook in 1890. Died 17 October 1917 aged 26. 

Private Robert George Heaman of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Robert and Amelia Heaman and husband of Francis J. Heaman, of 1, Spinning Path, Bath Rd., Exeter. Born in Burrington in the September Quarter of 1876. Died 28 August 1915 aged 39.

Private Frederick James Holwill of the 16th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Frederick and Mary Holwill of Dolton. Born in Dolton in the June Quarter of 1893. Died 6 November 1917 aged 24.

Private William Howard of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of  the late William Howard and Mrs. Agnes Carter (née Way, formerly Howard), of 119, Yonder St., Ottery St. Mary, Devon. Born in Shobrooke in the June Quarter of 1887. Died 25 September 1915 aged 31.

Private Jonas Martin Kelly of the 16th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Matilda Kelly, of Henstill, Sandford, Crediton, and the late Jonas Kelly. Born in Crediton in 1892. Died 2 September 1918 aged 26.

Private Arthur Ernest Kenwood of 1/4 Territorial Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Beatrice Brannon, of 4, Cumberland Terrace, Paris St., Exeter. Born in Crediton in the March Quarter of 1898. Died 7 February 1917 aged 19. 

Private William John Knapman of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment.  Son of Richard Henry and Emma Knapman, of Thorverton, Devon; husband of Alice Knapman, of Winscott Cottages, Newton St. Cyres, Exeter. Born in Crediton in the March Quarter of 1891. Died 30 October 1916 aged 25.

Lance Corporal Frank Langabeer of the 16th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William Langabeer; husband of Annie Langabeer, of 75, Westexe South, Tiverton. Born in Crediton. Died 2 September 1918 aged 35.

Lance Corporal Charles George Leaman of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Charles and Fanny Leaman. Born in Colebrook in the June Quarter of 1897. Died 7 October 1918 aged 21.

Private Albert Victor Lott of the 9th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Mary Ann Lott of Shobrooke. Born in Shobrook in the June Quarter of 1887.  Died 2 April 1917 aged 30.

Private Henry Robert Maunder of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Leah ( née Bradford and formerly Maunder) and James Maunder and step-son of  George Tucker. Born in Poughill in 1887. Died 25 September 1915 aged 28.

Private James Northcott of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of the late William and Mary Ann Northcott. Born in Crediton in 1879. Died 29 September 1915 aged 36.

Private Bertie Pook of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of  Philip and Sarah Pook and husband of Alice Pook, of 10, Mary St., Bovey Tracey . Born in Crediton in 1893. Died 13 April 1918 aged 26. 

Lance Corporal Rowland Prior of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Edwin and Mary Prior, of 3, Parliament St., Crediton,  Born in Cheriton Fitzpaine in the March Quarter of 1889. Died 10 November 1916 aged 28

Lance Corporal James Pugsley of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Frank Pugsley, of West Farm, Lapford and the late Mary Jane Pugsley. Born at Brushford in 1887. Died 21 April 1915 aged 28.

Private Mark Radford of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William Radford, of Puddington, Crediton, Born in Crediton in the March Quarter of 1894. Died 1 July 1916 aged 22.

Private James Randall of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Ann Randall and brother of Mr. A. G. Randall, of The Black Dog, Crediton. Born in Stockleigh English  in 1883. Died 11 March 1915 aged 32.

Private Edward James Steer of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Harriet Steer. Born in Crediton in the September Quarter of 1892. Died 6 July 1917 aged 25.

Private George Wheaton of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment.   Only son of Archelaus John (born in Broadwood Kelly) and Mary Jane Wheaton, of 166, Sewell St., East Fremantle, Western Australia. Born in 1892.  Died 18 December 1914 aged 22.
