J. BRAY
57669 Able Seaman James Bray. Naval records confirm the registration of his birth as being at Compton, near Paignton, 9 October 1855; however, in his response to the 1901 census he gives his place of birth as being Compton Martin which is in Somerset, then adds the words "South Devon". Husband of Mary Jane Bray of Chittlehampton ( he was single in 1881). He appears in the 1901 census as being a warder in the Royal Navy Prison at Cliffe, Sussex.

61063 Able Seaman Albert Dart. On enlistment he said he was born in Devonport 25 September 1855 but h e was, in fact, born in 1857 . His widowed mother was Eliza Dart.
W. DAVEY
Gunner William Davey of the Royal Marine Artillery. On enlistment he said he had been born in Ilfracombe in September 1847 but he was actually born in 1849. Enlisted 22 September 1870. Gave his age as 33 in 1881. Son of James and Margaret Davey. His father was also a seaman.

80855 Able Seaman James Dawson. Born in Lidford (or Lydford) 11 February 1858. He gave his age as 23 in 1881.
W. DAYMENT
731 Corporal William H. Dayment of the Royal Marines Light Infantry. Born in Stonehouse 10 March 1857. Enlisted 20 January 1872. Son of John and Mary Dayment - his father was a Royal Marine also. His wife Henrietta (19) and their 2-year old son William were living in Chapel Street, Stonehouse in the 1881 census.

103754 Ship's Stewards' Assistant James Henry Dunn. Born at South Pool, Stokenham, 9 January 1863. Gave his age  as 18.in 1881. Son of John and Johanna Dunn. According to the 1881 Census, his father was Leading Stoker on HMS Judas.
