PUPILS AT ST. HILDA'S SCHOOL, EXETER, IN 1915

All of the pupils at St. Hilda's School in 1915 may not be included on the following list. It is, rather, a list of the names of 114 pupils present at the school's annual "Presentation of Certificates" which took place on Friday 3 December 1915 and which were published in the Western Times on Saturday 4 December 1915.

Guests of honour were Mrs. Stockham Davis (daughter of the local M.P) and Prebendary S. W. E. Baird, Rector of St. Sidwell's. The joint Principals, Miss Crabb ( who gave the opening speech) and Miss Sanford were also on the platform. In her speech, Miss Crabb commented that the school had had its largest-ever intake at the start of that Autumn Term so we should assume the a number of new girls who had not yet achieved any kind of certification would not have been present on this occasion. The school had a kindergarten department and, apart from a little girl brought in to present flowers to Mrs. Stockham Davis, these small children may not have been present.

Advert for St.Hilda's School 1915

This advertisement for the school appeared in the Western Times on 10 December 1915. The letters after Miss Crabb's name do not imply a teaching qualification. Her sister, Kate Crabb, was mostly concerned with the welfare of the girls rather than their education. Miss Sanford, however, holds an Intermediate Degree, probably gained at the University College of Exeter which was then in Gandy Street, Exeter.
