"Hatherleigh is a small market town and parish in the Hundred of Black Totrrington, 16 miles from Torrington, 19 from Bideford and 214 from London, which contained, in 1831 1628 persons.  It is situated near the Deer brook and within a short distance of the Bude Canal. The pursuits of the inhabitants are chiefly agricultural. The market day is Wednesday, and the great markets are held on the 5th of February and the 4th of November; the fairs on April 28th, July 9th and October 2nd. A porteeve is annually appointed by the Lord of the manor. There is a parish church dedicated to St Peter and St Paul and a chapel belonging to the Weslyan Methodists."
