A 1914 - 1918 WAR MEMORIAL PLAQUE

This plaque contains just one name and was erected by that man's parents.

The other men are remembered at the top of the Roll of Honour.

 

Kentisbury 1914 Memorial Plaque

This is not the first memorial in Devon to have initial letters filled in with colour and like all the others, it has become very hard to read with the passage of time.

 

Sacred to the lasting memory of my beloved husband

Fredrick George Charley of Cowley Farm, Kentisbury

Killed in Palestine 3 December 1917 aged 22 years.

and buried eight miles NW of Jerusalem.

Younger and dearly loved son of John and Mary Charley of this parish.

345532 Lance Corporal Fredrick George Charley of the 16th (Royal Devon and Royal North Devon Yeomanry) Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Mary Jane Charley of Kentisbury; husband of Caroline Charley of Nutcombe farm, Combe Martin. Born in Kentisbury in 1895. Died 3 December 1917 aged 22.
