CHARLES GREENSLADE  DCM

The award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to 33172 Sergeant Charles Greenslade of the Devonshire Regiment was gazetted 4 November 1918.

He was the son of Hugh Greenslade  and Ellen Greenslade (née Chanter) and was born in Morchard Bishop ( or, as he told the Army when he joined up, Morchard Road) in the December Quarter of 1890.

From The London Gazette

4 November 1918:

"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He went forward and held a heavily shelled position with his Lewis gun, covering the retirement of troops until all his ammunition was exhausted. He then collected more ammunition and covered the retirement from another position. He did similar work on the following day until relieved. His daring and skill with his gun caused the enemy severe losses and materially assisted the defence."
