Sampford Courtenay has been busy changing its  1914 War Memorial by removing the names of men who were either not born in the parish or who were were recorded elsewhere.

We present first the names of 6 men who the parish council  believe to have been born within the Parish followed by  four names, of men who are not believed to have been born in the Parish.

 

E.J.HAWKINS
50992 Private Edwin John Hawkins of the 1st Battalion, the Somerset Light Infantry. Son of John E and Hannah Hawkins of Exbourne. Born in 1898 Died 24 October 1918 aged 20.
W.H.HILL
3/7068 Private William Henry  Hill of the 2nd Battalion, the 1st/4th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of  Samuel and Kate Hill. Born in Sampford Courtenay in 1897. Died  7 November 1917 aged 21.
F.E.HORNE
202222 Private Frederick Edward Horne of the 1st Battalion, the 1st Worcester Regiment. Son of Alexander and Emma Horne of Halse Cottage, Bow. Born in Sampford Courtenay in 1897. Died 24 November 1917 aged 20.
S.J.HORN
9159 Lance Corporal Samuel James Horne of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment.  Son of James and late Charlotte Horn. Born in Exbourne in 1889.

Died 26 February 1919 at home aged 30. Buried in St Andrew's Churchyard.

W.E.LAKE
5013 Private Wallice (sic)  Edwin Lake of the 12th London Regiment. Son of William and Harriet of Chapple, Sampford Courtenay. Born in Sampford Courtenay in the December Quarter of 1899. Died 9 August 1918 aged 19.
H.PHARE
K9261 Stoker 1st Class Henry Phare of the Royal Navy, HMS Indefatigable. Son of John and Sarah Phare of Bank Cottage, Sampford Courtenay. Born in South Tawton in 1892.  Died 31 May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland, aged 24

 

B.A.MALLETT
6012 Private Benjamin Albert Mallett of the 6th Battalion, the Somerset Light Infantry. Son of John and Susan Mallett. Born in South Tawton in 1887. Died 17 March 1917 aged 30.
A.HELLIER
3059 Lance Corporal Alfred Hellier of the Devonshire Regiment. Nephew of John and Frances Hellier. Son of the late Francis and Ellen Hellier. Born in Sampford Courtenay in 1900. Died 10 April 1916 aged 16. Note the age of this Lance Corporal!
E.HELLIER
37209   Private Ernest Hellier of the 3rd Battalion, the Norfolk  Regiment. Son of Ernest and Harriet Hellier of Skaigh Cottage, Belstone. Born in South Tawton in 1899. Died 30 December 1917 aged 19.
T.J.LETHBRIDGE
2nd Lt. Thomas James Lethbridge of the Royal Flying Corp, 34th Squadron. Son of Emily and the late James Lethbridge of South Tawton. Born in South Tawton in 1896. Died 25 September 1918 aged 22.
