TOPSHAM RESIDENTS LISTED IN THE UNIVERSAL BRITISH DIRECTORY c.1794

The Universal British Directory of Trade, Commerce & Manufacture was issued in separate volumes over a period of 7 to 8 years between 1791 and 1798. As the different volumes were published, updates and alterations were made so that no listing can be specific to a single year but rather, to the final years of the 18th century.

No street locations were given for the traders. The original spelling has been retained.

Topsham is four miles from Exeter and 176 from London. It is almost encompassed with the Clist and the Ex and has a market on Thursdays and a fair on St Margaret's Day. (July 20th) This is the port of Exeter where all the large ships land and are unloaded and take in their lading; and here are officers of the Excise for that purpose. Here is the residence of the captains, shipwrights and Etc. It is a tolerable large place, consisting of several streets and a long strand.

There is a cross-post, every day in the week except one, to Exeter and carts pass to and from Exeter every day.
